Day 9: Shopping & Cantonese Food

The next day we went to take a look at the Pearl market. Here there were lots of vendors in a wholesale market. The main focus was pearls and jade as this was the place where it was cheapest, but still authentic. Mackenzie picked out earrings and bracelets for herself and others.  Right after our excursion we had to get some paperwork completed. Only one parent was required, but they were meeting in the circular fancy restaurant at our hotel, so we both went. After that it was a fairly hot day so we took some time to hang out on the rooftop pool. It was interesting being surrounded by buildings. There was a shallow kids pool, but for some reason Bailor wasn’t feeling it. We went ahead and went to the main pool instead and that was a little bit better, but Bailor was still in a weird mood and enjoyed splashing around some, but otherwise wanted to get out. They had nice oversized Cabana style lounge chairs so we sat there for a little bit so he enjoyed that more. After a nap we decided to go out and about to explore some more. There was an interesting looking restaurant with lots of murals that was a Cantonese hot pot restaurant. The owner was very welcoming and kept asking us what we wanted and we realized that he couldn’t understand us even though he really wanted to. After finding someone that knew some English, we ordered something that was a variety of seafood and interesting veggies. The server was very attentive and stayed to cook the food (which was good because we didn’t know how to cook it). It was a little imposing though so we didn’t end up eating as much food as we probably would. It was interesting and good, but there were some of the seafood even our adventurous palates were challenged with including something that was the texture of a loofa sponge. Try chewing on that. We did have fun learning what Bailor would eat. He took care of all the weird squid like items, but he didn’t want the sponge either. We ended up getting some McDonalds pies (taro and pineapple ordered at the kiosk ordering station) This is good because you can order in English, but I accidentally hit Chinese and was determined to see if I could make it and I did. :-) And some more delicious noodle rolls.
