Day 8: Medical and Sightseeing
The next day was time to get the medical exams completed. We got a chance to try an even more fancy buffet including a build your own ramen station with fresh cooked noodles and cappuccino machine. One of my favorite things I found on the buffet was black soy bean milk. A lot of drinks we found to be too sweet for us, but this was perfect! And we found Bailor’s favorite, CRACKERS! (Funny story about the crackers to follow)
The medical exam took place at a non descriptive government building near the US embassy. Bailor did decent for getting poked and prodded. Like many Chinese buildings we had seen, Christmas decorations were still up in July. They did have a love for Disney though, with a big smiling Mickey on the floor. Everything came back fine for Bailor and we were dismissed so, instead of taking up seats for the many waiting adopted families, we retired to the lobby where you could grab a coffee, ice cream (what we found to be a good Bailor bribe) and you could also get your bottles of scotch out of the vending machine downstairs. We decided to stick to the coffee. :-)
After the event we headed back to the hotel to rest for a bit. Then back down for the afternoon’s activities. We headed to a historic building and gardens that was kind of a school called Chen Academy. Many government funded artists in residence (translation cheaper and hand made ) were available so this is where we got a good part of our souvenirs. There were people making stone name stamps, intricate paper cuttings and a number of other items.
That evening we met up with the other families to go to eat. We ended up at an Italian restaurant. It was interesting to hear their stories and this was the first time we had Bailor interacting with other kids as well.
